Former Convent of Santa María de la Encarnación

The architectural complex of the old Convent of Santa María de la Encarnación in Coín is one of the heritage jewels of Coín and houses the Department of Culture of the City Council of Coín. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest -BIC- in 2008, it is made up of a set of diverse constructions, of which the church and bell tower stand out, around which the convent building is structured, from which two cloisters stand out.

The origin of the building is the old Arab mosque, which was converted into a Catholic temple -it was the first parish church in Coín-, built between 1487 and 1491, the result of the first construction stage, and the tower, which began work in 1514 to serve of bell tower It will not be until the middle of the 18th century when Bishop Juan de Ulate y Santa Cruz gives permission to form the Convent of Poor Clares, devout women who have occupied the tower since the beginning of the century, making space for a primitive cemetery associated with the church. Since then it has undergone numerous transformations.

The original cloister stands out, which at first had porticoed galleries only on the ground floor. In the church, the proportions of its naves and the simplicity of the language of the spaces stand out, which contrasts with the baroque of its facades. The changes it underwent in the 18th century reform hid its initial appearance, affecting the vault, façade, walls, choir and alcoves, whose style can be considered to correspond to a tempered baroque, without excessive display of movement and overload. Different covering elements, locksmiths, carpentry and certain constructive solutions are also noteworthy.
